One injured as tensions rise over contested land in the North West
A long-running land dispute between the Babanki and Bambui communities in Cameroon’s North West Region turned violent on Monday, September 14, 2026, leaving one young man seriously injured.
The incident occurred at Aleghe’fo, an area located between the two communities and at the centre of a longstanding disagreement over land ownership.
BaretaNews gathered that a confrontation broke out after individuals from the Babanki side arrived at the disputed area. During the confrontation, a young man sustained a serious machete wound to his hand. His hand was not severed. He was rushed to the Bamenda Regional Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
Tensions remained high on Tuesday, September 15, as members of the Babanki community went to the Divisional Officer’s office to present their concerns.
The development also led to the closure of the Bambui market, while members of the Bambui community were asked to appear at the DO’s office.
A group of Babanki women was also seen heading towards the office on Tuesday afternoon. Their specific purpose was not immediately clear.
The ownership of the disputed land remains contested. A source from the Bambui community insists the land belongs to Bambui, but the claim has not been independently verified.
Authorities are expected to intervene to prevent further escalation and address the longstanding dispute.
