We are getting reports that Chia Samuel Awoh, an ELECAM official in Fundong and Mart Ankiambom are in custody at the Fundong Brigade for reportedly collecting signatures from Southern Cameroonians who want to see an independent Southern Cameroons. They are presently still being interrogated.
Mola Njoh Litumbe, Senior Southern Cameroons citizen, and activist declared that Sam had called prior to his arrest , Sam complained that he was about to be arrested. Momohnews, a sister online media said that an overzealous citizen from Njinikom had gone to the Brigade in Njinikom and reported that Sam and this lady were administering the Signature Referendum.
The Njinikom Gendarmes raided Sam’s office and carried away many of the forms they saw. However, they never took those that had been signed already. Reports say Sam had already more than 1250 signatures- Momohnews writes.
However, updated reports suggest, they made Sam to bribe the overzealous officials 60.000 CFA before they could be released. The two Southern Cameroonians are out and doing well. Their signed forms are still with them. The struggle continues.
It should be recalled that Mola Njoh Litumbe a month ago had called for a signature Referendum to petition the UN. According to him, this will facilitate the independence process.
It is worthy to note that the fact that an ELECAM official is investing in this just gives an idea of what those who work with the government could want but cannot publicly support because of victimisation from the regime.
As we prepare for 1st October celebration, it is good to remind that Southern Cameroons was the southern part of the British Mandate territory of Cameroons in West Africa. Since 1961 it has been part of the Republic of Cameroon, where it makes up the Northwest Region and Southwest Region. Since 1994, pressure groups in the territory have sought independence from the Republic of Cameroon, and the Republic of Ambazonia was declared by the Southern Cameroons Peoples Organization (SCAPO) on 31 August 2006. Since then till now, many Southern Cameroons activists have been arrested and molested, others are still in detention while some are in for self-exile.
