A Gendarmerie investigator tells the Yaoundé military court that the phone linked to Amougou Belinga could not be recovered.

New details have emerged in the trial over the killing of journalist Martinez Zogo, with a senior gendarmerie investigator telling the Yaoundé Military Court that a phone belonging to businessman Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga was never recovered.

According to testimony attributed to Colonel Bialo Dieudonné, head of the National Gendarmerie’s Central Judicial Investigation Service, the missing iPhone was associated with Mélissa Amougou and allegedly contained a video showing the torture of Martinez Zogo.

The video was sent to Amougou Belinga by Lieutenant-Colonel Justin Danwe, who is accused of leading the operation that resulted in Zogo’s abduction and death. The issue of the missing phone has previously featured in proceedings.

Recent reports from the trial indicate that an iPhone 12, said to have contained the alleged torture footage, was not handed over to investigators, prompting questions from lawyers about what happened to the device.

The testimony and allegations remain part of the evidence the military court is examining. The circumstances surrounding the phone’s disappearance, as well as the authenticity and contents of the alleged video, remain matters for the court to determine.
