The French Cameroun regime has strongly denied media reports alleging that its long-serving president, Paul Biya, is receiving medical treatment in a private clinic in Geneva, Switzerland, following what was reported as a health scare during celebrations marking French Cameroun’s National Day.
In a statement released on June 18, authorities in Yaoundé dismissed a report published by Jeune Afrique, describing it as “malicious and unfounded speculation” that violates the ethics and principles of professional journalism. The regime accused the publication of spreading false information regarding the health condition of the 93-year-old leader.
While confirming that Biya is currently staying in Geneva, Swiss Confederation, government officials maintained that he has not been admitted to any hospital or medical facility. According to the statement, the Head of State is not suffering from any medical condition that would require the level of care suggested in the report.
The regime nevertheless acknowledged that Biya could take advantage of his stay abroad to undergo routine medical examinations, a practice that has frequently fuelled speculation about his health in recent years. Officials insisted that the veteran ruler continues to oversee the affairs of French Cameroun and remains actively engaged in state matters despite his prolonged absence from Yaoundé.
Authorities further reiterated that President Biya is not hospitalised and assured supporters that he will return to French Cameroun “as soon as possible.”
