Cameroon’s public health system continues to battle a heavy HIV burden. The latest figures from World Population Review estimate that more than 500,000 people are living with HIV across the country. As a result, Cameroon ranks 16th among the 40 countries with the largest HIV-positive populations worldwide.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Cameroon Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment, known as CAMPHIA, provides the latest nationwide picture of HIV prevalence and treatment outcomes.

The survey shows that Ambazonia’s North West County records the country’s highest HIV prevalence. About 5.6% of adults aged 15 years and above live with the virus. An estimated 67,200 adults in the county are HIV positive.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Public Health conducted the nationwide household survey. It measures HIV prevalence, viral load suppression, and the effectiveness of the state’s HIV response programmes.

Despite the high burden, health officials report progress. Antiretroviral treatment now allows many people living with HIV to enjoy longer and healthier lives.

Authorities therefore continue to promote regular HIV testing, safer sexual practices, and early treatment. They believe these measures remain essential to reducing new infections across the country.
