Mark Bareta Declares Unwavering Commitment to Ambazonian Struggle, Rejects Forgiveness from Cameroon

April 2, 2025 – In a bold and defiant statement addressed “To Whom It May Concern,” prominent Ambazonian activist Mark Bareta has reiterated his uncompromising stance on the ongoing conflict between the Cameroonian government and the Ambazonian independence movement. His statement, widely circulated among the diaspora and on social media, sends a clear message: the fight for an independent Ambazonia is far from over, and reconciliation with Cameroon is not on the agenda.

Bareta, one of the most vocal figures in the Anglophone separatist movement, directed his message primarily at Ambazonians in the diaspora who were involved in the revolution between 2017 and 2023. According to him, the Cameroonian state neither forgets nor forgives, and those who took part in the struggle should not expect protection or clemency — now or in the future.

“Any Ambazonian living abroad between 2017 and 2023 who was openly involved in the revolution… will not be forgiven by Cameroun,” Bareta warned. “Nothing you say or do in 2025 or in the future will protect you from the actions of Cameroon and its allies. The damage is done — and good damage for that matter.”

The tone of the statement reflects deep mistrust of any potential reconciliation efforts, and a belief that the conflict has reached an irreversible stage. Bareta emphasized a set of unyielding principles in his message:

  1. No forgiveness for Cameroon – which he blames for initiating the war and committing atrocities.

  2. No apology for supporting self-defense – reaffirming the right of Ambazonians to resist military aggression.

  3. Unwavering demand for independence – rejecting any compromise on the vision of a sovereign Ambazonia.

  4. Measured criticism of excesses – stating that while the movement has addressed misconduct when appropriate, it does not diminish their broader mission.

“Cameroon does not forgive, and people should stop trying to be kind and to play nice,” Bareta stated. “Ambazonia will be free, and we must keep supporting it, most especially militarily.”

The statement comes at a time when discussions about peace, transitional justice, and reintegration of separatist fighters have gained traction within some international circles. However, Bareta’s remarks underscore a continuing rift between those advocating for dialogue and those committed to an armed struggle for total independence.

Observers note that such rhetoric may harden positions on both sides of the conflict. While the Cameroonian government has maintained a firm stance against secession, voices like Bareta’s reflect a persistent resistance among a segment of the Anglophone population and diaspora.

As the crisis enters its ninth year, the path to peace remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that for Mark Bareta and his followers, the fight for Ambazonia is far from over — and forgiveness is not on the table.
