Landlords Empowered: Evading Rents, Tenants To Receive 3yrs Imprisonment
Landlords Empowered: Evading Rents, Tenants To Receive 3yrs Imprisonment

The Cameroons national assembly is currently working on the 50 years old Cameroon Penal Code. Amongst the numerous issues deliberated at the June 2016 Plenary session in the upper and lower houses of parliament includes a Six months to three years imprisonment terms for recalcitrant tenants- (those refusing to pay their rents) will be charged with fines ranging from 100 to 300,000FCFA for evading two months rents. Some of the highlights includes:

– Adultery remains a criminal act not only against women, but men inclusive.

– More jail terms for Homosexual acts

– The eviction of a spouse from the matrimonial home by any person other than the spouse of the victim is now a crime.

– Indecent or illegal practices in any Public or private enterprise will lead to complete disintegration, permanent or temporal closure of the enterprise.

– Renting fraud: Six months to three years imprisonment terms for recalcitrant tenants- (those refusing to pay their rents) will be charged with fines ranging from 100 to 300,000FCFA for evading two months rents.

– Unscrupulous tenants who before leaving the house damages some equipment will be severely punished.

– Street begging prohibited.

– Illegal sale of drugs is now a crime.

The scrutiny exercise was supervised by the Minister of Justice and keeper of the seals Laurent Esso, assisted by the Vice Prime Minister, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Relations with the Assemblies, Amadou Ali.

BaretaNews thinks that the issue of punishing tenants who could not pay two months house rents could be wanting. It is evident most of these parliamentarians and senators are landlords who own estates, houses, and mini cités across major regions in the Cameroons. It seems they sit in that house to deliberate things that they could have power on to fish out recalcitrant tenants.

However, in this present Cameroons economy, there ought to be some form of a dialogue between landlords and tenants. It is evident that most youths and students might be affected. We hope this brings sanity instead of disorder.
