“Beware The Concerns Of King Herod!”
The reawakening wind of change that is blowing through Cameroon is like the fall of a baobab (boma) tree. As it falls, the baobab tree sweeps along with it all the small trees on its path. Cameroonians have lived in sheepish docility for too long in all domains of life. Those who speak out against imposed dictatorial status quos are either seen as “enemies in the house”, or “extremists!” In the new dispensation when we would have retracted from our “advanced democracy” to democracy, we should be ready for petit “Wirbaism” that is going to send shock waves down the spines of those of us who took delight in practicing what we now denounce! Liberation and freedom has a contagious trickle down rippling effect!
When king Herod heard about the birth of a king of the Jews, “he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.” Who is that king that would not be disturbed by such information! The birth of a king who is not a prince presupposes that there is a threat to your throne. Herod was so worried that he called the chief priests and teachers of the law to find out from them where the Christ was to be born.
He went further and “called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.”
Having heard what he wanted, Herod already hatched an easy way through which he was to eliminate his “would be” rival. He told the Magi, “Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
Herod failed in his diabolic scheme to eliminate the would be king because God warned the Magi “in a dream not to go back to Herod…” (Mtt. 2: 1-12).Out of the richness of the text, let these few be our take home message for today:
Never trust the flattery words of any Herod.
Any Herod while flattering you with plan ‘A’ through dialogue, has a plan ‘B’, which is to eliminate any rival! (Cf. Ninety Minutes at Entebe, The Devil’s Alternative; The Negotiator etc).
Give time for the baby king to grow up before he reigns! One foot in front of the other and one day at a time…
Never underestimate Herod, so be ready for stiff resistance!
Above all, rely absolutely on God, lest you may go back to Herod and innocently betray the whereabouts of the “king to be!”
Therefore, let us put God first!
