Central Baghdad Monday saw a twin suicide bombing which has killed at least 27 people and 64 wounded according to the Ministry of the Interior.

At the Aviation Square, a commercial venue and assembly ground for most workers, two men wearing suicide vests, denoted their explosives which killed dozens and scores more injured.

Last month, the Iraqi government declared victory over the Islamic State, a caliphate of armed militant fighters who were in control of a third of Iraq since  2014. Despite the gains, reclamation of major towns and cities, ISIS continues to carry out bombings in the capital city of Baghdad and other parts of the country.

Today’s attack at the Aviation Square is the deadliest since a massive truck bomb killed 324 people around the commercial venue of Karrada back in July 2016.

The Karrada blast was the bloodiest single attack on Iraqi soil since the US-led invasion of the country which saw the ouster of Saddam Hussein in 2003.
