Since October of last year, Carles Puigdemont has been in Brussels, Belgium after he was sacked by Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. He faces imminent arrest if he shows up in Spain.

The separatist parties in Catalonia have unanimously agreed to reelect the fugitive politician as president of the region later this month.

Running on the Together For Catalonia ticket, a spokesperson for Puigdemont’s party confirmed he’s secured the backing of the left-wing ERC Party Tuesday. A deal also approved by the ERC spokesman and Puigdemont is poised to address regional parliament through video conference or have his prepared speech read by fellow MP later this month before the votes.
