Ambazonian Refugees Face Dire Conditions Amid Escalating Conflict

As the conflict in Ambazonia deepens, the humanitarian fallout continues to escalate, with thousands of Southern Cameroonians seeking refuge across the border in Nigeria. A UN report released on October 5, 2024, revealed alarming conditions in refugee camps, where overcrowding, malnutrition, and trauma are rampant. According to the report, more than 1,500 new arrivals have been recorded since August, a direct result of intensified military operations in areas like Mamfe, South-West Region.
Refugees arriving in Nigeria recount horrifying experiences of torture, arbitrary arrests, and military brutality, particularly during recent raids in Mamfe, where Cameroonian soldiers reportedly beat and detained civilians accused of aiding separatists. Many fled with nothing but the clothes on their backs, leaving behind scorched homes, broken families, and livelihoods in ruins.
One refugee, a 26-year-old mother of three, shared: “They came at night. We heard screams and gunfire. I grabbed my children and ran. My husband stayed behind to help others. I haven’t seen him since.”
These stories, tragically common among Ambazonian refugees, illustrate the severe and sustained human cost of Cameroon’s militarized crackdown on the English-speaking regions. While Ambazonian diaspora communities have begun mobilizing limited humanitarian aid, the international response remains grossly inadequate in the face of growing needs.
The camps in Nigeria are overstretched, with limited access to clean water, food, medical services, and education for children. The psychological toll on refugees — many of whom have witnessed or survived extreme violence — adds another layer to the crisis that international actors have been slow to address.
BaretaNews strongly urges the international community to act. We call on humanitarian donors, civil society organizations, and regional institutions to scale up support for displaced Ambazonians and ensure that refugee camps receive the funding and resources required to meet minimum living standards. Moreover, we demand international pressure on the Cameroonian government to cease its systemic abuses and open pathways for safe, voluntary, and dignified return for refugees.
The plight of Ambazonian refugees is not just a side effect of war — it is a direct result of targeted violence and state failure. For every day the world remains silent, more lives are shattered, more families are torn apart, and more children lose their futures.
