Cameroon is in mourning after the sudden death of Member of Parliament and lawyer Faustine Fotso. She died in a road accident on the Douala–Yaoundé highway on Friday, February 6, 2026.
Early reports say her vehicle lost control at Labo, about 37 kilometres from Yaoundé, before hitting a safety barrier. She died instantly at the scene.
Fotso was travelling from Douala to the capital when the crash happened. Initial information suggests her vehicle may have been speeding or veered off the road, but authorities are still investigating the cause.
She served as a member of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM). Fotso was known as an advocate for community development and a supporter of legal reform in Parliament.
Fotso’s public service record included election to Parliament in 2013, representing her home constituency in the West Region. She was also an environmentalist and lawyer who authored work on environmental impact and nature protection.
She founded the charitable association “Flame of Love, Peace and Justice,” which worked on community empowerment and legal awareness.
Her death highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Cameroon. The Douala–Yaoundé corridor is among the country’s busiest and most accident-prone highways. Road studies show risks arise from reckless driving, poor road conditions, and high traffic volumes.
Last year, official figures showed hundreds of road fatalities nationwide despite improved enforcement measures. Authorities have introduced new safety campaigns and technology to reduce accidents, but challenges remain.
Parliament and government officials have yet to announce funeral arrangements. Tributes from colleagues praise Fotso for her dedication to public service and her work in law and community development.
