Traffic monitoring officials in South Africa say ten people have died a bus traveling from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape in South Africa, flipped over in the early hours Thursday morning.

The crash took place around 2:00 AM, some 50 kilometres in the outskirt of Beaufort West, a small town in the semi-arid Karoo region.  30 other passengers are reportedly injured due to the accident.

The provincial traffic control boss, Kenny Africa, says ”The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle which then overturned.”

He went further to add ”We are not sure if driver fatigue could have played a role” but an investigation has been launched in order to get to the bottom of what happened.

Despite having the most modernized road network on the African continent, South Africa has an overall poor road safety record. Just last year alone, official data show that more than 14,000 people have died from road accidents in the Rainbow Nation.
