Cameroon Intelligence Report, an online tabloid is reporting that President Biya will be offering laptop computers to every university student in Cameroon. Each student from public or private universities will receive a computer laptop. The report further states that an agreement will be signed today Wednesday the 27th of July in Yaounde between Jacques Famé Ndongo, Minister of Higher Education and a Chinese company.
Cameroon Intelligence Report further stated that their source at the Presidency indicated that President Biya offer was within the scope of aiding young university students secure access to modern day digital economy. In total, nearly 500 000 students will benefit from the Cameroonian dictator’s Greek gift. The amount reportedly commissioned for the project has not been disclosed.
It should be noted that since 2009, Biya has been offering 50.000frs to some students in all state Universities who meet some certain academic criteria. A host of students has been benefiting from this. The President in his 2015 end of year speech had called Cameroonian youth the Android generation. He is actually moving to aid the android generation. BaretaNews notes that this move from the Presidency is aimed at preparing these University students towards 2018 presidential elections as most of these youth will be eligible to vote. Biya seems to be baiting them.
However, BaretaNews commends the President for taking such initiatives, even though coming late in his Presidency, we think the offering of these laptops will academically aid the students in their research. It will also make more students connected to the social media fight for change. BaretaNews cannot however at the point of publication independently verify this information from Cameroon Intelligence Report.
