The US House of Representatives committee investigating alleged Russia meddling in the 2016 presidential election issue a subpoena last week for Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist for the Trump administration, to testify behind closed doors on Tuesday.
The sit-down with the House Intelligence Committee comes amid Bannon’s recent fall out with President Trump over comments Bannon made to Michael Wolff, author of the Amazon’s bestseller ”Fire and Fury; Inside the Trump White House.”
Steve Bannon is quoted as describing the meeting between Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, campaign chairman Paul Manafort, other Trump associates and a Russian lawyer as ”treasonous” and ”unpatriotic.”
Bannon, has been a key figure in shaping Trump’s ”America First” agenda and has helped in promoting that message, he was pushed out of the White House in August of last year and he went back to the right-leaning conservative website Breitbart News where he was forced to stepped down after his feuding with President Trump last week.
The latest high-profile figure to give testimony to the House committee currently investigating into allegations of Russia’s meddling in the US election. Accusations Russia has denied and the Trump campaign denied colluding with Moscow to win November elections.
Later this week, former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and White House Communications Director Hope Hicks are expected to testify before the same panel, as confirmed by aides working inside Congress.
House committee Democrats have accused their Republican counterparts of rushing with the investigation and demanded to question more witnesses. They presumed the Republicans on the panel are giving political cover to President Trump.
