West Midlands Police have activated expanded stop-and-search powers in part of Birmingham until 7am on Sunday, 8 November, as officers respond to firework-related disorder.
The force said the authorisation began at 4pm on Saturday and would remain in place overnight, with additional officers conducting high-visibility patrols in key locations.
Under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, officers may stop and search people in the authorised area without needing the usual requirement of reasonable grounds. A linked Section 60AA authorisation allows officers to require people to remove face coverings.
Residents advised to check the authorised area
West Midlands Police published a map showing the area covered by the temporary powers in its official public notice.
The force said officers would remain in the area throughout the night. Anyone travelling through the affected part of Birmingham should be aware that the powers remain active until 7am.
The temporary authorisation follows incidents involving fireworks in Birmingham city centre. Police said two men arrested on Friday night on suspicion of illegally throwing fireworks in a public place remained in custody for questioning.
Those arrests are allegations and no finding of guilt has been made.
Police warn against gathering around firework disorder
Birmingham Police Commander Chief Superintendent Tom Joyce said the misuse of fireworks was dangerous and against the law. He also warned that people gathering to watch such incidents could place themselves at risk of injury.
The force said the operation was intended to protect the public, prevent disorder and allow officers to respond quickly.
The Express & Star independently reported the activation of the powers and their 7am expiry time.
How to report concerns
Police asked anyone with information about firework-related crime to call 101. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
People should call 999 where there is an immediate danger or an emergency.
