The breakaway LIV Golf league has announced that it intends to begin an orderly wind-down after negotiations over a proposed financial restructuring failed.
The organisation said its restructuring agreement with BC Partners Credit had been terminated and that the proposed transaction would not proceed. The announcement followed a hearing in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey.
Proposed relaunch abandoned
LIV Golf had been working on a recapitalisation plan intended to support a restructured league. It said the parties were unable to reach agreement on outstanding terms.
A lawyer for the organisation told the bankruptcy court that the debtors were no longer proceeding with the proposed “LIV 2.0” plan and were instead moving towards a wind-down designed to maximise remaining value.
The league said it would remain open to alternative proposals from third parties during the process. The announcement therefore begins an orderly liquidation process rather than an immediate disappearance of every corporate operation.
Bankruptcy proceedings continue
LIV Golf and affiliated companies filed for Chapter 11 protection in New Jersey on 8 September 2026. The court-supervised process followed the loss of major financial support and efforts to secure new investment.
The Associated Press reported that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund stopped funding the league in April and that a proposed investment from BC Partners Credit did not produce an agreed restructuring.
Major disruption to professional golf
LIV Golf began staging tournaments in 2022 and attracted leading players with large contracts, challenging the established PGA Tour and DP World Tour.
Its decision to wind down ends the planned 2027 relaunch and leaves remaining assets, contracts and creditor claims to be addressed through the bankruptcy process. Further court approval and procedural steps are still required.
This is a developing report. BaretaNews will update it if the bankruptcy court approves a final liquidation plan or a new proposal changes the league’s position.
