Ivory Coast’s National Council of the Union of Soroists, are calling on the Speaker of Parliament, Guillaume Soro to throw in his hat in the country’s 2020 presidential elections as their standard bearer.

During their first national council meeting which took place in Abidjan on Saturday, members of the union made their position and willingness to back his candidacy. Saying it was now up to him to decide.

Sitting President Allasane Ouattara has already declared his intention to not seek reelection but Guillaume Soro is yet to make an open declaration whether he plans on succeeding him.

In an interview with a French media a month ago, Soro said the matter would be discussed with President Ouattara and a host of others before making any decisions on the subject.

Passionate about healing the wounds of a traumatized Ivory Coast and reconciling a divided country, Guillaume Soro says he wants to calm the tensions created by post-election violence during the 2010 polls.
