Three occupational soldiers of La République du Cameroun (LRC) have reportedly been killed in an ambush in Matouke.
The attack occurred Wednesday, September 23, along the Matouke–Kotto road in Moungo County.
The soldiers belonged to the 23rd Motorised Infantry Battalion detachment stationed in Matouke.
They have been identified as Sergeant Ateba Olanguena Come, Chief Corporal Betkemo Banibou Maxime, and Private First Class Abienza Joseph.
The ambush reportedly occurred around 7 a.m. in the New Layout area.
Sources said the soldiers were heading towards a control post when armed fighters opened fire.
The attackers reportedly withdrew with weapons and ammunition belonging to the soldiers.
The Fako/Meme Unity Warriors have claimed responsibility for the attack.
The group reportedly described the operation as retaliation for the recent killing of three civilians in Ekona.
A video circulated after the Matouke attack shows individuals claiming to represent the group displaying weapons, ammunition, and military clothing.
However, the footage does not independently establish the identities of the attackers or the circumstances of the soldiers’ deaths.
The Matouke attack comes amid renewed armed confrontations around the Fako and Meme Counties.
It also extends the conflict beyond the Northwest and Southwest into neighbouring areas of the Littoral Region.
Security forces have reportedly launched operations around Matouke following the attack.
