Personal assistant to the anti-apartheid campaigner Zodwa Zwane has confirmed the death of Winnie Mandela, 81. The family is scheduled to release a statement later.
Winnie Madikizela Mandela was married to former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela for nearly four decades until 1996 when the couple finally divorced.
Her reputation has been dragged through the mud by legal troubles. The deceased former first lady was a staunch activist during the apartheid era alongside her husband who served 27 years behind bars.

May her soul rest in perfect peace. Winnie did all she could to free her people. Yes, there were controversies in her life like any of us, but today we honor her for standing with Nelson to let the world know that they were being robbed of their freedom to live and raise their children in as South Africans in their homeland.
The same situation bedevils Ambazonia today. Gradually under the pretext of unity, lrc gradually started uprooting every root that nourished Ambazonian educational and judicial systems. Stealthily, lrc has tried to erase everything Ambazonian to render the English community powerless, poor and hopeless. Ambazonians, like Mandela and Winnie say NO to biya. Like Winnie and Nelson, the fight for justice must continue until every Ambazonian is free from the slavery imposed on them by biya and french cameroun thugs.
As Winnie and Nelson exposed and killed a wicket system, the biya’s lrc wicket system must be resisted and destroyed. It’s Ambazonia or nothing.

Rest in peace Mummy
Rest in perfect peace Queen mother.
A woman who could not be cowed into silence when all other champions of SA liberation movements where either incarcerated or left for exile.
RIP Winnie. You help built South African, host to 10s of 1000s of Ambazonians who found it safer than what they had called home. In the spirit of what you stood for, we Ambazonians are in the process of restoring our independence and dignity as humans. Just as in your days, we have naysayers, brothers and sisters who have successfully learned & accepted slave status discouraging us every step of the way, but with truth and determination, we shall reach the mountain top.
